Live, in Progress!

OK everybody, we’re here at the red carpet -

well, not really. I’m parked on the sofa, having plowed thru a whole pile of student essays so I can enjoy the awards in comfort, without guilt or distraction. I’d love to crack open a beer but I have 3 classes tomorrow and I’ll never make it in time if I start drinking AND try to stay up for Best Picture. Fang/Walter Monheit is tightening up his last-minute picks as we speak, and I have ballots from Rosie, Digital Dame, The Artist Formerly Known as The Actor,  and The Planner ( an old friend but a newcomer to the Oscarblogfest). There are still a few minutes to deadline, if anybody wants to join the pool. McCaustic – are you pissed that I still haven’t sent you a prize for last year, or did you just get a better invite? Rosie – is the Baby Genius still interested? Gypsy Scarlett – are you out there?  Everybody get ready!

UPDATE:

I just heard Justin Timberlake say that he does not participate on Facebook, so I’m more impressed w/him than ever. Justin, if you’re out there, you can join the MJB family whenever you want – we’re the sensible alternative to FB!

Awww, careful now, I’m on FB both under my real name and the D.D. Syrdal appellation ;) So I’m tuned in while doing laundry and making dinner, I’ll catch as much as I can. Loved Cate Blanchett’s hair, wasn’t so wild about the dress.

  2. Digital Dame Says:

Reese Witherspoon is GORGEOUS. Wow, that hair is kind of retro, casual/glam all at the same time.

  3. maryjblog Says:

I love Reese; love her dress; the hair’s a bit dated for my taste.

  4. Rosie Says:

Baby Genius has had to beg off due to some last minute academic conflicts, but I am watching with her Sista Doc and we both had a problem with Cate’s dress. That weird cutout in the front coupled with the cleopatra shoulders made us go “HUH?”

  5. Rosie Says:

Also — the trend away from neck bling is curious…. some have added the statement earrings but by and large there is very little in the way of jewelry to speak of. maybe the jewelry trade doesn’t cultivate their relationship to stylists the way dress designers do?

  6. maryjblog Says:

Jeez, you’d think that wealthy Hollywood actresses would have some of their own neck bling – if you’re not going to rock your good stuff at the Oscars, when wouldja?

I loved the “Inception” intro – really clever!

  7. Digital Dame Says:

I don’t think I had a pick for ‘Art Direction”, which I think Inception just won? Rats. Ballot-Fail

  8. maryjblog Says:

No, it was “Alice in Wonderland” – I’d have thought you would have picked that one, just out of sentimental serendipity.

  9. maryjblog Says:

Hey, what do you guys think of James F. and Anne H.? Over here we are loving Annie, but James is acting like a cute guy with stage fright and a fistfull of Xanax. What gives?

BTW Fang is all smug over here b/c he picked Trent Reznor/Social Netwrk for Best Score.

I’m really glad to see “Inception” get some love in the technical categories because I really liked that movie and I feel like it came out too early and sort of got forgotten about.

  10. Digital Dame Says:

Franco is so wooden it’s hard to imagine him being nominated for an Oscar himself. Anne’s adorable, I love her. Thank god one of them has some personality.

I don’t see a pick on my ballot for make-up either. :( I think I got a little overzealous when I was deleting stuff. :::sigh:::

  11. Digital Dame Says:

Cinematography is the other one I missed picking. Dagnabbit.

  12. maryjblog Says:

You’ll have to make sure and really rock the post-show MJB Exclusives

    • Digital Dame Says:

Eh, don’t wait for my input if you need to get on with the tallying. I gotta call it a night shortly, not sure i’m going to have a chance to write up the extra credit ;)

      • maryjblog Says:

You can have till noon tomorrow, East Coast time – I probably won’t tally up the scores till later in the week anyway – I graded papers all weekend and I can’t bring myself to score/grade anything else tonight!

  13. maryjblog Says:

oh my god, Oprah’s bustline is like a country.

  14. TAFKATA Says:

So with you on Oprah’s bustline…

We usually love James Franco, but he’s not cutting it tonight. Anne is GREAT!

  15. maryjblog Says:

YESSS! I so wanted Tom Hooper to win Best Director. (thankz for catching my oopsie, DD)

  16. Digital Dame Says:

Hey! I got a bunch of them this year! I missed a few, but I actually picked some of the winners WOOHOOOOO :)

  17. maryjblog Says:

    The King’s Speech –

All right, justice was served! And those choir kids from my old stomping grounds, Staten Island, are adorable and well-rehearsed.

Good night, loved ones – we’ll talk on the morrow.

  18. Digital Dame Says:

If these kids bust out in a rap version of this song, I am going to throw my tv out the window.

  19. TAFKATA Says:

So glad The King’s Speech picked up so many. Definitely the best movie of the year!

The Planner and I tied at 12 each…
